![]() It might disappoint the 'purist' that the torpedo doors have been sealed over and the conning tower is off limits the price of preservation I guess. There is a plaque outside the sub explaining its history in both English and German. The shop also sells souvenirs, but alas there was nothing of quality or in English that inspired me to make a purchase. The ticket kiosk is just across the road from the submarine itself. The best - and cheapest way - to visit is to buy a combined ticket with Naval Memorial across the road. The submarine is located at the nortern-tip of Laboe - head towards the naval memorial and you won't miss it! There is a car park just up the hill to the south-east (small fee charged but plenty of room), which is easily found via Google and a sat nav! Plenty of cafes nearby and Laboe itself is about a 15min walk along the front. Less crowds and boat can get hot inside in warm weather. Six of us did the trip and we are not youngsters - so go on, give it a go! I would suggest getting to the U boat earlier rather than later. The travel is not as difficult as it may sound and is so rewarding. We were blessed with fine weather but what a great way to spend a day. The ferry docks at the pier right next to the train station at Kiel so just hop off and get the train back to Hamburg. ![]() ![]() Ferry takes about an hour with a few stops and gives you a different view of the coast from the sea. Ferry departure is at the bus stop where you get off the bus on arrival and is signposted Fordedampfer. On the return journey home take the ferry from Laboe to Kiel. Turn right along beach road and U995 is about a 1km walk. 40 mins journey or less on the express bus at a cost of 3.20 Euros one way. Buses depart from the bus stops inmmediately outside the train station on the opposite side of the road. From Kiel take the bus Linie 100 or express 102 to Laboe. First take a train from Hauptbahnhof Hamburg to Kiel 1 hour 10 mins (85km). Ther are numerous beach side cafes where you can purchase lunch or snacks with drinks - very pleasant after your exertions! Now for how to get there.we were based in Hamburg so I would siuggest 3 modes of public transport and make a day of it. I would recommend a combined ticket to enter both exhibits which is good value - about 12 Euros. A sobering monument that provides food for thought and contemplation. The walk up is not for the faint hearted or unfit! This is a steep stepped climb that will make you blow! However, there is a lift so the the not so able bodied can make the journey up too. Opposite U995 just the otherside of the beach road is the German Naval Memorial, an 85 metre high tower which from the top provides superb views of the coast and Baltic sea. Entry into the submarine is for the able bodied only as you have to negotiate hatchways and narrow passageways and the hull is all metal with sharp edges. Walking through the submarine you get a real feel for the life of a German WW2 submariner with the cramped and basic facilities - a real eye opener. The submarine is open for you to enter and explore and is in superb condition. It is located on the beach at Laboe which is some 12 miles North of Kiel. This is the last surviving Type V11c submarine in the world. ![]() We went to Hamburg for 5 days and the trip to U995 was probably the best excursion that we did.
